Paul Vidas, of Harleysville, a sophomore digital audio production major at Montgomery County Community College, got some real world experience this fall as an intern at WNPV 1440 Info Radio in Lansdale.
Vidas, who hopes to enter into a career in radio or sound for film, assisted with the production of WNPV’s coverage of North Penn High School home football games, in addition to other duties, such as manning the station’s score board phones.
“We thoroughly enjoyed having Paul with us here at WNPV,” said Sports Director Jeff Nolan, who served as Vidas’ supervisor at the station. “His ability to pick up what we were teaching him was a major plus. The fact that he was a super guy made it easy for him to fit in here.”
Vidas’ experience at WNPV only solidified the decision he made two years ago, when he changed his major at the College from business to digital audio production.
“I first took an audio class as an elective because I thought it would be fun,” he said. “I remember on the first day of class, the professor made a joke about the people who were there just because they liked to listen to the radio.”
Since that time, Vidas has jumped into his new major full force. He served as the “Top 200” music director for the College’s nationally-ranked Internet radio station Montco Radio, and in December he was elected as the station manager for the spring 2010 semester. He is also involved in the College’s Communicating Arts Production Group (CAPG), a student organization that produces weekly news shows in addition to other projects.
Vidas cites that a highlight of his time at the College took place last summer when he served as sound designer for “The Stranger,” a student-produced short film that was screened at the Ambler Theater.
“Walking into the Ambler Theater and knowing that people were actually going to see the film was an incredible experience,” he said.
Vidas will graduate from the College in May 2010 with an Associate in Applied Science in Digital Audio Production. He plans to transfer to Temple University to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
